We've all received those suspicious calls from unknown numbers, claiming to be from our network providers, right? They usually come with enticing offers or urgent requests, but did you know some of them could be part of a call forwarding scam?

Here's how it typically works: you get a call from someone posing as a representative from your service provider, be it Jio, Airtel, Vi, or any other network. They persuade you to dial a specific code, like *401#, followed by a series of numbers. Little do you know, this seemingly harmless action activates call forwarding, diverting all your calls and OTPs straight to the scammer's device.

But fear not! We're here to help you stay ahead of these scammers and protect your privacy and security. Here's what you need to know:


1. Recognizing the Scam

The scam often begins with a call from an unknown number, claiming to be from your network provider. They might promise you exciting offers or insist on activating certain services by dialing a specific code like *401#.

2. How to Protect Yourself

Stay Alert: Always be cautious when receiving calls from unknown numbers, especially if they ask you to dial unfamiliar codes.

Verify: If you receive such a call, verify the legitimacy of the request with your network provider directly through their official customer service channels.

3. Deactivating Call Forwarding

Knowing how to deactivate call forwarding can be your first line of defense against such scams. Here's how you can do it across different networks:


Jio:

Go to Settings > Call > Advance settings > Call forwarding on your handset.

Alternatively, use the following short codes:

Call forwarding Unconditional - *402

Call forwarding - no answer- *404

Call forwarding - busy - *406

Call Conditional call forwarding - not reachable-*410

All forwarding - *413

Airtel:

Simply type ##002# and press SEND to deactivate call forwarding.

Vi (Vodafone Idea):

To deactivate call forwarding when your phone is unanswered, dial ##61#.

To deactivate call forwarding when your phone is not reachable, dial ##62#.

To deactivate call forwarding when your phone is busy, dial ##67#.

To deactivate all types of calls, dial ##21#.
